Established in 2004 by a grant from DFID’s Business Linkages Challenges Fund, it was clear from the beginning that Alive & Kicking wasn’t a typical charity. The plan from the outset was for Alive & Kicking to be a self-sustainable social enterprise in Africa; using the surpluses it could generate from selling balls to further its social impact.
The charity’s founder, Jim Cogan, established Alive & Kicking’s first workshop in Nairobi in 2004. Nine years on and Alive & Kicking now has three African manufacturing workshops, employing over 120 people in the creation of 60,000 balls a year, and reaching out to thousands of young people annually with HIV/AIDS education campaigns.
Headmaster of Westminster School in his professional career, Tristram now sits on various school boards and leads A&K's fundraising.
Sughra started at A&K in 2008 and was Country Director of A&K Zambia from 2010 to 2012, returning as Interim CEO in April 2013.
One of A&K's first recruits, Joel has completed an MBA at the United States International University during his time at A&K.
From diverse previous roles from working for a water development programme to Exxon Mobil, Jane brings great experience to A&K.
